Item-Based vs Weight-Based Pricing: Why LoopX Does It Differently

If you have ever shipped an item with a traditional freight carrier, you have likely encountered the dread of the post-delivery billing audit. You carefully measure your box, weigh it on a scale, calculate the volumetric cubic size, and pay what you think is the final price. Two weeks later, you receive a surcharge invoice because the carrier’s laser scanners measured a minor packaging fold and re-classified your item into a higher billing matrix.

Traditional freight pricing is designed to protect the carrier's cargo capacity, but it does so by pushing all the complexity and billing uncertainty onto the customer. LoopX was built to fix this by replacing volumetric pricing with a clear, rules-based item flat-rate structure.

The Complexity of Volumetric Weight

Volumetric pricing relies on a calculation of length x width x height divided by a density factor (often 5000). For regular businesses and private senders, this requires constant measuring, weight-guessing, and complex calculations. It also makes upfront budgeting impossible, as minor measuring discrepancies lead to unexpected price increases post-delivery.

Furthermore, volumetric pricing does not account for the actual handling constraints of the item. A large, lightweight foam block takes up massive space but is easy to handle, whereas a heavy metal desk is compact but requires two people and protective blankets to move safely.

How LoopX Item-Based Pricing Works

Instead of charging by complex weight and volume metrics, LoopX charges flat rates based strictly on item categories and quantities. We classify common items into clear categories: bedroom furniture, living/dining furniture, large appliances, small appliances, office equipment, and pre-packed boxes.

When you book a loop run, you select the exact item category and quantity (maximum 3 items per booking). The system instantly calculates your upfront price. This pricing is final:

  • No Post-Booking Audits: The price you pay at checkout is the exact price you pay. There are no surprise weight surcharges or billing adjustments.
  • Blanket Wrapping Included: Because we price by category, we know exactly what protective equipment is needed. Every furniture item is automatically blanket-wrapped by our drivers.
  • Transparent Access Rules: Heavy stair flights or lift requirements are declared and charged upfront at a clear, flat rate ($20 per flight), ensuring drivers are fairly compensated and prepared.

A Fairer System for Everyone

By simplifying pricing into clear, category-based rules, we protect both our customers and our drivers. Customers receive absolute price certainty before dispatch, and drivers receive clear, pre-planned instructions and fair compensation for heavy handling requirements. It is a predictable logistics standard built for real-world scenarios.
